Individually designed programs best meet the needs of a person with autism. Those with autism should be learning, living and working in settings where there is ample opportunity to communicate and interact with others who have the skills they lack.
Autism Consultant – Mental Health Counsellor
Primarily responsible to provide mental health counselling services and support to individuals of all ages (children/youth/young adults) with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their caregivers/families. This position supports people in dealing with complex issues and experiencing significant distress or dysfunction, trauma, cumulative stress and/or problems in daily living related to ASD and mental health matters. Delivery model includes individual (one-on-one) and group support. This multifaceted position encompasses building community connections, liaising with collateral service resources and community capacity-building through presenting information, education, and training. The incumbent must be able to work effectively with minimal supervision and possess a strong desire to work collaboratively with clients, families, and with multidisciplinary team members and stakeholders – both internal and external. In this position there will be considerable opportunity to provide input into program development, planning, implementation and evaluation. Currently, this position requires a combination of remote (video conference/telephone) and on-site service delivery.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree preferably in Counselling, Psychology, or Social Work; however,
- Holds a professional license or registration with Saskatchewan Association of Social Workers, Saskatchewan College of Psychologists, or the Canadian Counsellor and Psychotherapy Association or registration with a mental health association;
- Post-graduate counselling experience with multiple populations including those on the autism spectrum; and demonstrated knowledge and professional practice skills in frontline services including case management, counselling or clinical services, program management, and/or brief service/crisis intervention. Clinical training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Applied Behaviour Analysis is desirable;
- A minimum of 2 years of clinical experience in the development, delivery and coordination of ASD-mental health specific treatment program plans for children, youth and adults with ASD.
- Possess a valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle is required
