Latest Statistics on Autism

  • The latest statistics indicate one in 150 Canadians are affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs), an increase of over 600% in the past ten years.

  • Saskatchewan Learning reports that on September 30, 2005, 6.5 out of every 1000 students (374) enrolled in Saskatoon and area schools have been identified as having an autism spectrum disorder. This represents an 8% increase from the previous year.

  • For the province of Saskatchewan, 866 children with autism are enrolled in Saskatchewan schools.  This represents 5 out of every 1000 students enrolled and represents an increase of 9% from the previous year.

  • What was once viewed as a rare disorder is now recognized as the most common neurological disorder affecting children.

  • Autism spectrum disorders are now more common than Down’s Syndrome, childhood cancer, cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis, blindness and deafness.
